It is such an honor to offer this reading at the request of my dear lodge sister Carla Goddard, Shaman Medicine Woman, for her virtual Full Moon Healing Ceremony on Wednesday, November 28th.

I held a fire on Friday night, the 23rd, as I opened my mesa with the intention of asking what do those who are called to this fire need to see? My mesa lay open on Pachamama, under the night sky, one that brought rain and fierce winds by morning. All elements were present and accounted for!

There is a beauty and a mystery that burns within every soul that calls us to this fire. One that cannot be known through intellect. A calling that spans through time and space, through any perceived borders or boundaries. A call from all directions on our globe. There is no differentiation of race, creed or belief that determines the arrival of each soul to this sacred destination.

We have come for we are doing the work of the collective. Burning ancient roots embedded in both our personal and collective psyches. Burning mistaken identities of who we are. Burning ideas and beliefs of what does it mean to be spiritual. Burning masks of what we think our spiritual personas are supposed to be.

False and mistaken identities we have come to believe as truth. The limited versions of ourself. The overly nice parts of who we are. We have come to burn the shadows of our soul. Our demons are a part of our humanity that cannot be ignored, suppressed or denied for it is the demons of our darkness that are clamoring to the light. Hidden in fear for centuries, through eons of time.

This is what is deconstructing. This is what is called to the fire now. The longing of the lies to die. Our souls can no longer tolerate the lies we have told ourself, the lies imprinted upon us. We have lived with these lies for so long we are uncertain of who we are. Without these false cloaks of spiritual identity there is chaos. A deconstruction of what we think we know. And this is part of what calls us to this sacred flame.

Yet the fire also feeds our luminous body. It feeds our passions. It fuels the spiritual seeds of awakening just as water nourishes seeds planted in the belly of the Earth. Our spiritual seeds are awakened by fire. We are called to deconstruct. And we are called to rebirth. To become more intimate with the sacred fire that burns within each one of us. To learn the ways of tending our own sacred fire so our fires are not raging out of control. So we have enough resources to sustain and feed our fires. So we keep the eternal flame of our sacred fires burning in our hearts and bellies to feed our sacred purpose and our walk in the world. To feed and tend our relationships both with ourself and with those we are most intimate with. So that the fires within us do not consume the fires of another but rather feed and sustain the fires within every soul.

The shell at the bottom is off my mestana (textile). It speaks to the depths that are necessary. The depths of listening, the depths of vulnerability that we are being asked to surrender to in order to source from the deepest waters of mystery. The strategies we have used to control and manipulate the outcome are no longer sustainable to navigate the course of our life. We may believe we have given up all control. We are being asked to go deeper than ever before. Deeper into the unknown. We must be surprised, allow something new to arise and awaken from our depths or we are holding on to the safety of certainty.

Our vulnerability is the source of our truest power. Any place not in alignment will not be sustainable. This may appear as a crisis and create fear around a loss of control. But the crisis is an agitation of a state of being whose energetic vibration can no longer be sustained.

Our roots have anchored us to our past. Our roots have hidden in shadows. We may be blind to how our demons are informing our actions. We cannot change what has come before but if our roots are tangled in resentment, bitterness or anger we need to clear these channels so our roots are anchored in our power to create. Our channels to source are clear. We consolidate our creative power and channel that life force energy so we may align with our sacred purpose. We cultivate a sacred expression of our life in action.

Our source arises in stillness. Our inner authority is our guide. The direction we travel is one of depth. The depths we reach in silence and stillness are the depths to which we ride the rivers of our destiny.

This is what the kuyas speak.

I have been feeling a sensitivity to loss. A deeper sense of grief and letting go as many things have been washed clean from my life over the past year. Truth be told this cleansing started even before then.

This heightened loss is amplified by the ending of a 26,000 year cycle of evolution as prophesied by many traditions, including the Mayans. Heightened by the waves of devastation in the aftermath of the storm Sandy here in New York and along the East Coast.

Endings bring death. Necessary to birth anew. Yet the transition of not knowing what is to come is unsettling. Life loses its anchor.

This longing of heart and soul called me to ceremony. I open my mesa.

What message do you hold to offer guidance during these times of great transition?

At the very heart of this reading sits a kuya (stone) from Ausangate, the holy director of the Apus (mountains) of the Andes. These times call from us the heart of a warrior. The strength and fortitude to stand on our own two feet.

We must embrace both the darkness and the light, the totality of our beings in order to point the way to a new vision. A vision that directs us to our sacred purpose.

We must clear the channels to connect to Pachamama. Listen with our soft bellies to her wisdom. Let our breath feel its way to her rhythms, her cycles, her heartbeat. Learn to move in flow with her life force. In this way we discover our own rhythms and cycles for we are not separate from our Mother.

It is time to listen from the depths of stillness. As chaos swirls around us we must have a haven within to hear the truth of our inner authority rather than be propelled into the whirlwind of fear and anxiety that has fueled our consciousness for so long. It takes a conscious effort to disengage from the addictive patterns of drama and collective frenzy to discover the still silent beacon within.

It is time for an honoring and recognition of our ancestors. A remembering of our roots. Our minds could not possibly comprehend all those that have come before us to bring us to this moment in time. Every step we have taken holds the steps of every ancestor woven through time. We must walk with respect with those who have brought us to this great juncture in history.

The ethereal bridge of faith is needed to connect us in ways where our mind is not able. Our minds have served far too long as masters of our fate. Trust in our divinity, trust in our sacredness, trust in the knowing that we are right where we are meant to be is our salvation now.

We must develop the sensitivity to how every thought, every feeling is reverberating within us and effecting the world around us. Life in one way or another has left us scrambling for higher ground. Where is the lifeline to safety and security? That is not where our liberation lies. Letting go of everything we know about what is safe, letting go of everything we thought would make us feel secure is unraveling asking us to surrender old lifelines to the tidal waves of uncertainty that are purging through each and every one of us.

The mind has enslaved us to a fate of limitation, sacrificing our souls for the creature comforts of modern-day consumption. We are being asked to pay attention to what we are consuming. How are we using and expending our resources? The resources of our planet? It is the shifting foundations of power that are crumbling leaving us challenged to find ground until the rumblings subside and the shifts of the tectonic plates of our identity realign.

Drinking from the wells of stillness, honoring the teachings that have come before us create actions that bring beauty to the world. A sacredness for life rises from the depths of our being as the veils of separation fall away. We know, from the deepest recesses of our Soul, we are intimately woven with all of life. From the roots of the Earth to the illumination of the Stars we are not separate.

It is difficult still to know and live in this truth. The spiritual wound of separation runs deep. This is the truth we are being propelled towards. This is the rebirthing we are waiting for. To re-remember who we are. Not as the diminished wounded creatures we have been led to believe but as the majestic Beings of light beyond measure.

Death is coming to the limited ways of being, of seeing who we are. Fear arises in death. We do not know what lies ahead. Discovering the inner authority as guide without falling prey to the conditioned suppression of our true natures leading us to believe we are less than, bound and chained in fear is awakening.

Faith and trust are the steps to a new path. A path of liberation. A freedom of each Soul rising to the majesty they were born to be.

This is what the kuyas speak.

This image may be used as a tool for meditation to energetically encode
the vibration of gratitude within your luminous body.

Gaze with soft eyes and a relaxed breath for 5 minutes.

Cultivating a heart of gratitude breeds humility. Gratitude begins to dismantle the internal fight and conflict we wage against life so we are no longer in battle against what is.

Our heart stretches wider in appreciation for both the darkness and the light. This naturally creates a softening of our posture, a softening of our mind, a softening of the way we walk through the world, a softening of how we relate to others. Our hearts begin to rise in a song that celebrates our existence just as the bird sings to greet the morning.

Gratitude literally changes the way our cells vibrate thereby changing the way they interact with each other. Our physical body restructures. Gratitude strengthens our immune system. Gratitude influences the chemical solution in which our brains bathe altering moods and mindsets while adjusting the frequencies it transmits enhancing our ability to create and manifest.

The hearts of our modern-day world are not accustomed to this vibration. Our apologies and smiles are often devoid of feeling, forced and conditional. The false pretenses of thank you clang together in a hollow heart.

There is an attention and training required to cultivate the vibration of gratitude through a moment by moment practice. When we notice denser vibrations of resentment, anger, bitterness consuming our heart we give pause. We find one thing, one small thing in any given moment that we are grateful for, even if it is for the feeling we are experiencing in that moment. No matter how small, we begin to plant seeds of gratitude within our heart. On a frequent and daily basis these seeds begin to take root in order for our heart to rewire in the vibration of gratitude. It is this vibration that not only entrains the heart but influences our entire body down to the cellular and chemical make up of who we are.

Gratitude connects us to Pachamama, our Mother Earth and begins to feed and cultivate our relationship with her. We are collectively disconnected in our consciousness to the planet we live on. Gratitude begins to weave our luminous bodies more deeply to Mother Earth which in turn feeds our gratitude from the unconditional love from Pachamama. It is a source of sustaining our vibratory levels of gratitude through a reciprocal exchange with our own Earth Mother.

Gratitude makes us more receptive to information from both below us and above us. Gratitude grounds us more deeply to the Earth as well as opens channels to a higher source of wisdom above.

Gratitude consolidates other vibrations within it. Dense or heavy vibrations held within the vibration of gratitude become transformed altering the way we are seeing, perceiving and being in reality.

Masks and hidden agendas fall away no longer held in place by the vibration of gratitude. Gratitude creates simple and direct ways of relating from our heart to the world around us. Gratitude bypasses other methods of communication. Two people may not speak the same verbal language but if those hearts are meeting in gratitude there is an understanding and language of the heart that happens simply through the vibration of gratitude.

Gratitude brings beauty and sacredness to the world. Gratitude does not operate from a place of looking to get anything. A heart in gratitude offers unconditionally without discrimination or condition.

This is what the kuyas speak.

Shamanic journeying accesses other levels of consciousness and puts you in communication with Spirit. Receiving information from these realms offers a higher and wider perspective from which to see your life journey.

The easiest way to enter these other dimensions is through the breath. And the most rapid dimension altering breath I have found is a circular one. Mouth open. Jaw soft. A continuous loop of breath in and out of the mouth until the veils between the worlds become thin.

Lay on the belly of Mother Earth. Send her your sorrows, your heartaches, your falsehoods and beliefs. Surrender them from your heart. Surrender them from your belly. Let her take the weight of these from you and offer them to her graces. Return to our Mother for healing all that no longer serves you.

With a sincere heart ask for a gift for your healing. Begin with your breath. Breathe in the love of our Mother. Breathe out and empty. As you enter the portal to Spirit notice images, sensations, feelings. Ride the breath on the wings of Spirit until you are met with surprise.

Under the Full Moon of Aries I lay belly to belly on the Earth with a call from my heart to find its way.

A circular breath in and out of my mouth. The life force of Pachamama draws in with each inhale. Every exhale I empty into her belly.

I ride the breath to a Spirit journey. Skipping over stones down, down, down a spiral path. I reach a stream and begin to float in its current. I am taken to a waterfall under which I sit. Washed clean and purified.

I travel through woods until I come across a corpse. It is me lying dead in the woods. My neck torn open in a gaping hole. Vultures meticulously eat away at my exposed flesh.

It is dark. I am running. Running as a wolf through woods I do not know. Confused and lost.

The pain of being lost, not knowing where I am going brings me to tears. Painful to be so alone, on my own, lost in the woods. An ancient cry of a lone wolf.

Exhaustion keeps me from running any further. I begin to drink from a nearby stream my exhaustion soothed by its waters. A reflection of my wolf face appears in the water. I lap this up. A love of self feeds me as I drink in this reflection. An act of tenderness full of self nurturing.

The weight of an ancient wound is heavy on my back. Doing everything on my own, always on my own. An isolating pain of this lone wolf met with more tears. Dropping like rain to the sands of Pachamama.

Wolves begin to appear around me. One at my side devoutly begins to lick my body. Again I cry. Tears of gratitude wash through me as I receive this blessing. Tasting love as never before. Every wound in my heart stroked clean with love.

Through tears of  gratitude for this unforeseen devotion I return these caresses sweeping my tongue over this beloved wolf until our necks intertwine. Our throats meet in a posture of deep vulnerability, exposed and open full in an ecstatic union of trust. I abandon to a depth of feeling never before known.

Ancient wounds of pain and isolation, devoid of self-worth are met with a deep vulnerability and uncharted trust.

My eyes open. Before me lies a small seed cracked open in the shape of a heart. I blow my prayers of gratitude for this journey, gratitude for Pachamama, gratitude for the tender love and healing of the Spirit wolves into this seed, this cracked open heart. I set them free to the flow of the tides.

I return to the beach that evening with my drum.

Under the full moon I call to Great Spirit.

I call to the belly of our Mother.

I call to the sacred and holy breath.

I call to the stillness of the waters.

I call to the Lightening flashing in the night sky.

I call to the Song of the Wolf beating in my heart.

I call to Ancient ones sparkling as Stars overhead.

I call beyond time.

A call beyond space.

I call from my heart.

A heart held in grace.

Be humble for you are made of Earth.
Be noble for you are made of Stars.

At the heart of our despacho sits the tiny and humble acorn to hold the intention of awakening the seeds of our becoming. This month I had the great fortune to visit Isis Cove, an intentional community and retreat center on 45+ acres of unspoiled land in the magical, beautiful, blue mountains of western North Carolina.

If you would like to add your prayers and intentions to this month’s despacho follow the ceremonial video below from the early morning woods at Isis Cove. Find a time and space free from distraction. Create sacred space. The simple act of lighting a candle can transport us from our day-to-day routine to a moment of the sacred.

I am grateful to Linda Star Wolf and Brad Collins, the founders, co-directors and visionaries of Isis Cove and the warm welcome that embraced me from each and every Soul I encountered on my short stay there.

Offering ceremony through the internet transcends previous boundaries, forms and ways of participating. We have an opportunity to connect from all over the world. It is a reflection of the magical and mysterious matrix of which we are all part. I honor and give thanks to each Soul that is called to offer prayers and intentions here to uplift the whole.

As we gather under the darkness of Mama Killa, Grandmother Moon, we open our hearts to give thanks for the bounty of Pachamama and receive the gifts of vision.

This month’s intention for our New Moon Despacho is inspired by the Pachamama Days of Peru. The shamans of the high Andes dedicate the month of August to honoring Pachamama and dreaming the world into being for the year ahead through the despacho ceremony. This ceremony weaves us to powerful visionaries and links our prayers to the collective intent of the paqos, the shaman priests.

When we strip our hearts naked and taste its longing we discover our personal prayers are a call to humanity, a prayer of the collective. The essence of every heart longs to be in union with Spirit, to know the song of its Soul and express that for the good of all while we are here, in this kaypacha, the Earth plane. Our individual prayers become prayers for the collective. My prayers empower your prayers. We uplift each other. This is the meeting ground of ceremony.

We offer our collective hearts to Spirit.
We let go of the attachment of how our visions and dreams
will manifest in the kaypacha.
We cultivate trust in the divine order.
We surrender to the great mystery
so we are no longer guided by the voices of fear,
the limiting belief systems
and old paradigms that have laid false imprints in our minds.
We deepen our connection to Nature
and open the channels to Spirit
as we fearlessly step into the guidance
that is so willingly offered to us.

AHO!

If you would like to add your prayers and intentions to this New Moon Visioning Despacho create a time and space that feels sacred for you. You will need about 20 minutes to follow this ceremonial video. We start with a short purification ritual followed by a journey of your heart to the year ahead. You are then guided on how to offer your prayers and intent to the qintu (a prayer holder that is placed in the despacho). I suggest viewing on full screen by clicking arrows at bottom right corner of video.

The following suggestions are offered after ceremony to integrate this experience more deeply into your being (these are on the video as well):

  • Create a Sand/Earth painting – gather natural elements such as sticks, stones, flowers. Let these reflect different aspects of your vision. Create a border for your mandala on the Earth and arrange these elements in a meaningful pattern for you. This would be beautiful to anchor in your garden if you have one.
  • Create an Altar for your Visions – dedicate a space with a small cloth or textile and place any objects that symbolize your vision. Feed your altar by lighting a candle, leaving offerings or spending some time in meditation there. An altar will help hold and carry your visions to the year ahead.
  • Express your Creativity – journal about what you feel in your heart or your dreams. Paint, draw or create a collage or vision board of your experience. The artistic expression integrates the experience more deeply into your Soul.

From the bottom of my heart
I bow in gratitude
to the beauty
of each and every heart.
Thank you,
Thank you,
Thank you.

A ceremony is born!

Ceremonies that were taught by our grandparents are not the same ceremonies we hold today. With each experience, each reflection, ceremonies transform to become the sacred offerings of the present day. As boundaries and preconceived notions are left behind ceremonies evolve. It is a time for birthing new ceremonies. And so it is how this ceremony came into being. A meeting of two medicine women with the heartfelt desire to share the joy of sacred ritual and ceremony from their own lives with the world around them.

Through evolution we must walk in honor and deep respect of the traditions that have come before us. When any evolution happens, we are cautious to reflect to ensure our approach is deeply respectful and in integrity with each step. A teacher once explained, very long ago, whenever we cling absolutely to something, whether it be tradition, ritual, ceremony, or emotion, we are stepping into the ego. Ego is only one way – my way.

When we evolve and create from the old, we are breathing our own life force into the ceremony. There is no greater honoring than to give life. It is about walking in balance with integrity and honor in all things – including creation.

As we evolve to co-create ceremony, it is also important to understand that the intention of any ceremony is to create a bridge between the world of Spirit both within us and surrounding us. The intention of this ceremony is to balance the water and fire elements with the new beginnings of the new moon. To co-create a prayer stick with a despacho. To use the power of water to carry the fire of passionate joy.

We will be weaving different tradtitons through the waters of both the Atlantic and Pacific in this ceremony. Carla Goddard was gifted a prayer stick during a tropical storm as the rains, winds, and the fire of lightning fused in one moment. During the next week she will take your prayer requests while adding your name to the prayer stick through a daily ceremony. At any time you may blow your intention into the prayer stick picture. As she travels to the West Coast, she will carry this sacred object and release the prayer stick into the Pacific Ocean to be carried by the waters in another ceremony.

Photographer Clark Little

Photographer Clark Little

At the same time, Karen Chrappa will be in Bimini where she will create a despacho on the shores of the Atlantic. A despacho is a prayer bundle from the shamans of Peru that traditionally is made by blowing prayers into cocoa leaves, placing them with offerings in wrapping paper to tie up like a gift before burning in a fire. For this ceremony, prayers will be held in a natural finger sponge into which your prayers and intentions will be blown in with your breath through a short ceremony on video. The sponge will be carried to Bimini and become part of a mandala of natural elements created in sand. Our despacho in sand will return to the waters through the tides of the Atlantic.

Through this unique, bi-coastal ceremony, we call to the waters to cleanse us of all that blocks that flow of JOY in our lives. We call to Pachamama and all her elements to balance our beings to the vibration of JOY. We call to Inti Ti Ti, Father Sun, Mama Killa, Grandmother Moon and all celestial beings above to shine the light of JOY in our hearts. We call to the medicine of dolphins to teach us the ways of unwavering JOY.

Ascension to JOY allows laughter and play into our life. So many times life seems to wear us down into a seriousness that does not allow joy to flow. Ascending to the joy inherent in our Soul brings smiles, laughter and play into our daily life. Doorways open so our moments of joy grow simply by being able to enjoy whatever your journey brings to you.

May you join us in JOY!

AHO!

Never in my life had I experienced the Earth under my feet as I did that day. Descending from 16,000 feet after ceremony in the Andes I began running. Not so much by choice but rather because I had no other choice. The life force of Pachamama, the Earth herself, rose on up coursing its way through my body. The power of a stallion surged through me unleashing my body into an insurpressable stride. In that moment I understood how the four leggesds run across the Earth effortless, wild and free.

They are not distracted by mindless chatter as they charge across her belly. They are not competitively striding to reach their destination. They are in deep communion in the most intimate of connections with the divine life force pulsing beneath them. They are fed by her, sustained by her. They open without restraint to her. Again and again and again. In a dance of glory across her belly.

By the time I reached bottom all I could do was bow to the ground in a cascade of tears. To taste but a drop of her divine nectar is spontaneously humbling. To receive a kiss of her sacred elixir touches grace. The power of Pachamama is undeniable and yet this power source below our feet is often absent from our awareness. Through centuries of conditioning we have come to believe we have dominion over Earth. We walk across her belly with a sense of ownership rather than servitude.

Perhaps the most blatant power play of this in our world rages between the corporate oil infrastructure and her resources. This hold on power is nearly unshakeable. Why on Earth would an oil company willingly give up this position of power? So much invested. So much at stake. So much has been gained. And so much to lose.

It may be easy to point fingers at the imbalance of power in the world around us but can we see the interplay of these forces within ourself? Where have we lost our power? Where do we give it away? What beleifs about power have created the infrastructure of our life? Where has our idea of power brought harm or suffering to another? When have we abused our power? When have we been abused? What do we gain through our power? And what have we got to lose?

The power play in the world around us takes center stage in our own heart. There are no easy answers to what is power but this much I know. Whatever we once thought is no longer true. Answers may not come easy but the questions are necessary to build new bridges to power within our own hearts. For a bridge to the power of our own heart creates bridges to true power in the world around us.

A balance of power is a dance on the Earth rather than dominion over her. A balance of power is a union of our heartbeat with that of the Earth. It is a balance of maintaining relationship with the world around us without losing the sovereignty of our own heart.

An empowered heart does not rely on the heart of another to meet its needs for love, security or approval but rather integrates the heart of another to uplift and empower. An empowered heart knows its force magnifies in union with other hearts in a force greater than alone. True power sources from a heart that is generous, a heart that cooperates, a heart that at its very essence longs to share.

It takes practice to fortify our heart in this way. To avoid falling prey to the old belief structures deeply embedded in our systems. It takes courage to build a new infrastructure from the true power of our heart. How do we drop our protective armor and expose our most tender heart when everything we have been conditioned to informs us to protect, defend, attack and justify in the face of threat?

This is the vision of Melissa McNair, co-director of the Feathered Pipe Foundation. This is the work of the open hearted warrior. There are ways to access this power. There are tools to keep our tender heart open. To dance in a new way with power that serves rather than suppresses. That uplifts rather than diminishes.

This is the conversation to empower your heart.

This is a call to your most tender heart.

This is the work I invite you to join.

This June at Feathered Pipe.

I was wading through the waters along the rocky shores of Long Island with an intent of prayer and cleansing during our New Moon ceremony. A little boy of about four fearlessly ran barefoot over shells and rocks straight into the water. He was kicking and splashing and playing as if the water was another child he had just met on the playground.

The poetry of Kahlil Gibran came to mind…

“Forget not that the Earth delights to feel your bare feet
and the winds long to play with your hair.”

A few moments later adults descended. Get out of the water! You are getting your clothes all wet. Put your shoes back on. Your feet are going to get hurt. With grown ups towered over him the little boy stood defenseless while chastised for his behavior. Playtime came to an end.

What I have come to see as the root to most people’s pain and illness is a disconnection from the healing and life sustaining force lying right beneath our feet. For twenty five years I have seen people with pain in their bodies. And it doesn’t matter if the pain is in their feet or their neck. The problem is we are not connected to the Earth. Oh we walk along the ground to get where we need to go but in subtle and overt ways we learn that the Earth is not a safe place so best to retreat from her belly.

I was encouraging a client with chronic pain to walk barefoot on the Earth. She shared how she was beaten as a child for walking barefoot. She had stepped on a nail and the ensuing hardship of doctor care and expenses unleashed the wrath of her mother’s own fears upon her. Not only did my client suffer the pain of a nail in her foot but the trauma was compounded by a lesson literally beaten into her. The Earth is not safe for danger lurks right below our feet.

We have all received this message in one way or another. This disconnection appears as a violation of trust. If we cannot trust that the Earth is safe, that we will be provided for and that our needs will be met, how do we expect to cultivate this feeling within ourself? Our own body becomes fraught with fear. If we cannot live outside on the Earth or inside of our bodies, where do we go?

The strategies we use to avoid both the body of the Earth and the body in which we dwell creates much of the pain and suffering. Muscles have to literally shape themselves into twisted knots in order to withdraw from the ground beneath us.

For to trust in the Earth is to relax in our own body. To trust in the Earth is to believe that we are provided for fully and completely. To trust in the Earth is to delight in her elements.

I could not do much for the little boy that day but I said a prayer of thanks for his Spirit message. A prayer to each child. A prayer for every heart. To remember to delight with bare feet on her belly. To remember how much Pachamama longs to have us play on her Earth.

Through one of the darkest nights of my Soul walking barefoot through the woods seemed the only thing to do. A cry from depths of isolating loneliness longed to connect, to belong, to heal. I later came to learn there is a great body of research on the healing benefits of walking barefoot. I did not need science to tell me this. A primordial wisdom knew.

Most of my day is spent barefoot. My work involves using my whole body as a tool. I need ready access to my feet. Walking barefoot is a practice for me. To be barefoot on the Earth changes my usual way of walking. Walking barefoot on the Earth forces me to slow down. A slow and mindful step is necessary to keep my feet from hurting. One cannot hurry over sticks and stones.

I listen through my feet. It is as if the deep magnetic pull of Pachamama draws the busyness of thoughts out of my head and into her belly in an intimate unity of body on Earth. How often am I rushing? What is it I habitually run from? Walking barefoot in the woods shows me. Maybe there are tears to be shed. Maybe there is silence to relish. Maybe there is communion in the woods. Maybe there is nothing at all. But I miss all this when thoughts are leading the way. The discovery comes by slowing down. Listening. Closely. Connected. To the heartbeat of our Mother.

Most of the life I thought I was going to live has swept away. I do not know what my next step is. Where I am going is uncertain? Who will be with me I do not know? My bare feet a prayer as I walk on our Mother. What is my next step now Pachamama?

I listen with bare feet.
